CBD to Treat Cancer - A Miracle Cure or a Scam?

CBD seems to be everywhere these days yet still it remains a fairly taboo subject. My mother-in-law called me daily for two weeks when she first heard myself and her son were taking CBD oil - questions like “Now are you sure it’s legal?” and “So you definitely don’t get high?” and “You’re not going to get into trouble taking this are you?”

To be honest we have had mixed reactions from people when we speak about CBD oil. Some have surprised us by admitting they have been taking it for some time but never spoke about it and others react like we are the new cartel of Bandon!

CBD or cannabidiol is one of the many compounds found in cannabis and hemp. But before you liken us to Bob Marely, we must confirm that unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (i.e the stuff that gets you high), CBD is non psychoactive. According to https://www.fsai.ie/faq/cbd_oils_and_hemp_oils_legal_status.html as long at CBD oil is under 0.2% THC (European law) it is legal to take, buy and sell. But be careful if you are a frequent traveller as there are still many countries that have not made CBD legal and even if you just take your own supply with you, you could be stopped and prosecuted. So do your research first before travelling. Also make sure you research well the products that you are buying, there are a lot of poor quality, non tested products.

I read amazing articles every day about the ‘potential’ of CBD with treating ailments and disease. To date, no one is allowed to make claims of the benefits of CBD but companies can say ‘may treat’ or ‘possible benefits’. A 2016 review of medical marijuana’s use in oncology, published by the American Medical Association journal JAMA Oncology notes “Marijuana in oncology may have potential for use as an antiemetic (relieving nausea and vomiting), for refractory cancer pain, and as an antitumor agent. However much of the data is based on animal data, small trials and are outdated”.  There is even less research into CBD’s potential benefits for cancer patients. But still a small amount of studies have been conducted and according to the National Cancer Institute, research indicates that CBD may slow the growth or reduce the risk of recurrence of certain kinds of cancers including breast cancer. It has also been noted to possibly enhance the potency of certain medications and reduce the horrid side effects of chemotherapy including vomiting, nausea and anxiety. However to date any research that has been compiled had been limited and much more research and case studies will need to be documented before such claims can be confirmed or debunked.

We are not claiming or stating that CBD be used as the sole treatment for any ailment or health condition but we are intrigued that every single day there are new articles, blogs and information about the amazing results people are getting from taking CBD. We have seen it in our own home as well as our customers, like treating Bryan’s severe eczema. For us it has been a life changer, creating a better quality of life for Bryan which of course has a knock on effect for the entire family.
